Why are elections important?

In case you did not notice, there’s a big election coming up.

There are many reasons for why elections are important in our society, but first and foremost is the fact that they have been instrumental to humanity’s success on this planet.

While there have been great empires and civilizations throughout the history of humanity, it is only in modern times that our society has seriously begun to consider its own purpose.

Our success on this planet since its emergence some 200,000 years ago has been primarily a result of having developed a method to select the best leaders possible.

Unlike other animals, our society has a tendency to select for individuals who are able to rise above their own biological tendencies and instead focus on the greater good of our people.

While there is no doubt that humanity has much room for improvement in this regard, the fact remains that with elections and other forms of democracy, our society is able to identify individuals who are most likely to act in ways which will benefit the group as a whole.

If we look at the number of different ways a society can be structured, it becomes clear that all of them are inferior to democracy.
