The United States presidential election is coming in less than a month, and I wanted to put some thoughts down in reflection of what will certainly be a stressful time for most Americans.
If I may begin by stating that on the whole, we are irrational beings. We have grown up in a world where we were told from the time of our birth that democracy is one of the best forms of government, but is it really? Are we truly free to choose who governs us?
Do we have the freedom to choose? Don’t get me wrong, it is obvious that our world is not a democracy. For example, if you’re born into a poor family and are forced to do manual labor for the rest of your life. You have no real choice in this matter. You can’t just run away from your job because you may not even be able to afford rent. If one does manage to escape poverty they will be looked down upon by society as being lazy or an outcast.
Of course, one could say that you have the freedom to choose what job they want but is that really true? Why were we taught in school that we had such ‘freedom’. I personally don’t think it’s a good thing. It has caused society to become so materialistic and even if you do manage to get out of poverty human beings are always going to look down on those who are poor.
Sure, we can say that you have the freedom to choose what job you want but there are still many people in this society who don’t even know how to read and write. And if they do manage to learn reading and writing they may not have access to education due their financial status in life.
Let’s look at the case of China for example. If you’re born into a poor family there and do not have access to any education – then what? You’ll simply be stuck with manual labor jobs your whole life. Sure, one could say that some people do manage to escape poverty but just because a few people managed to escape poverty doesn’t mean society is fair.
The truth is that there will always be some people in society who are born into bad circumstances, where they can do nothing about their life. Even if we could say for example that they have the freedom to choose what job they want – then again why were we taught in school that such was a good thing? I mean, does it really benefit society?
