Thoughts on whether elections matter

To begin with, I’ll just say that the question “do elections matter?” is a bit strange. It’s like asking why grass doesn’t matter or whether water matters or not. If you say to me: ‘Does water have any particular significance?’ it would be rather difficult for me to answer such a question.

However, I think that the underlying problem is a bit more psychological.

The strange thing about elections is that people pretend they’re important and then they don’t pay attention to them at all. It’s as if you go to a restaurant with your friends and order food, but when it arrives nobody looks at it or tries it.

So, there are two problems with elections. First of all, the system is built on a lie. It’s as if you invite someone to your house for dinner and say: “Come over! We’ll have a great time!” and then when they come over it turns out that you’re actually not going to do anything together.

The second problem is that people just don’t care. They feel no responsibility for what’s going on around them, they just let things slide.

So, the solution to these problems is rather simple. Make elections important and then make people care about what’s going on around them.
What would make elections important? It’s up to you. I can’t tell you how to do it, but think about what is the most important thing in your life and then ask yourself: ‘Why does this matter?’ That’s probably a good place to start.
